The former S-MOS Systems Inc. is touting its buyout by parent company Seiko Epson Corp., with a product lineup aimed partly at the portable-electronics market. Now known as Epson Electronics America Inc. (EEA; El Segundo, Calif.), the chip maker started the year as a partially owned affiliate of Seiko Epson. The parent company gradually bought out S-MOS and folded it into the EEA subsidiary, said Roy daSilva, director of marketing and engineering. EEA itself was created in April from the Electronic Devices division of Epson America Inc., with S-MOS added later as EEA's semiconductor arm. The idea was to create a U.S.-based parallel to the Epson Electronic Devices and Components business unit in Japan. EEA is primarily a marketing operation for technologies developed in Japan, but the company also includes two ASIC design centers and an LCD design center.
